Line editing
Refining Your Voice

Writing is personal. It’s layered with voice, intent, and meaning. My role as a line editor is to refine that voice, not replace it. I help your work communicate with clarity, precision, and impact while staying unmistakably yours.
If you’ve completed a draft and know it’s almost there but not quite landing the way you want, line editing is the step that bridges that gap.

What Is Line Editing?
Line editing focuses on the craft of your sentences. It looks closely at how your ideas are expressed line by line to strengthen clarity, tone, rhythm, and flow.
In a line edit, I work directly within your manuscript to:
- Refine sentence structure and readability
- Strengthen word choice and eliminate redundancy
- Improve pacing and narrative flow
- Clarify meaning without flattening your voice
- Ensure consistency in tone and style
I’m not rewriting your work. This is about elevating the work to allow your voice to come through more powerfully and intentionally.
How Line Editing Differs from Other Types of Editing
Understanding the distinction between editing types can help you choose the right level of support:
Developmental Editing
This is the “big picture” phase. It focuses on structure, storytelling, and overall content.
- Plot, pacing, and narrative arc
- Character development
- Organization and cohesion
A developmental editor may suggest major changes, including restructuring or rewriting sections.
Copy Editing
This is more technical and detail-oriented.
- Grammar, punctuation, and syntax
- Consistency in formatting and style guides
- Basic clarity corrections
Copy editing ensures correctness but typically does not deeply engage with voice or stylistic nuance.
Proofreading
This is the final polish before publication.
- Typographical errors
- Formatting inconsistencies
- Minor surface-level corrections
Proofreading happens after all substantive editing is complete.
My Approach
I approach line editing as a collaborative process. You won’t just receive a marked-up document, but also insight into why changes are suggested so you can continue strengthening your writing long after this project.
You remain the author. My role is to help your work say exactly what you mean more effectively.
Areas of Focus
Memoir
Memoir requires a careful balance between emotional truth and narrative clarity. I specialize in helping writers:
- Maintain authenticity while strengthening readability
- Shape reflection into compelling narrative
- Ensure tone remains consistent and grounded
- Clarify timelines and transitions without losing intimacy
Your story matters. My goal is to help readers feel it the way you intend.
Fiction
In fiction, every sentence contributes to immersion. My line editing focuses on:
- Strengthening narrative voice and stylistic consistency
- Enhancing dialogue for realism and impact
- Improving pacing at the sentence and paragraph level
- Eliminating distractions that pull readers out of the story
Whether your style is literary, commercial, or somewhere in between, I help refine the language so the story moves seamlessly.
What You Can Expect
- A fully edited manuscript with tracked changes
- Margin comments explaining key suggestions
- Optional summary notes highlighting patterns and opportunities for growth
If you’re unsure what level of editing you need, I’m happy to help you determine the best next step.
